Modelling the Sacred: The Temple

Author's model

Combining the previous two exploratory models, I have produced a model to demonstrate the relationship between the 'Clearing' and the 'Enclosure'.

The central space is represented with an altar; referencing the foundational practice of sacrifice in the practice of religion. It is in the sacrifice that the sacred is made known (Dupoy, 2013 'Mark of the Sacred').
The column/beam typology of the henge is referenced to the altar entrance which would face the water.
The steps of the churches toward the sanctuary, or grotto in Jerusalem, are referenced from the land side. A screen obscures direct visual access to the altar, creating a sense of journey from the mundane to the sacred, just as when one approaches the great temple of Athena Parthenos in Athens, one must first follow the course of the Acropolis complex, never coming directly on the axis of the temple portico till the journey is completed.
