Water and Stone
The relationship between these two is central to Carlo Scarpa's gallery rooms and garden of the Fondazione Querini Stampalia. At high water the canals move into the building causing the gallery to be moated beneath the art.
In a water city as Venice, it is inevitable to make a relationship to this beautiful and destructive element, ever changing never still.
Accommodating the practalities of life, the vernacular of Venice provides a typology of steps and landing points along the fondamenti for the coming ashore from boats.
Dark and bright, black and white.
The interaction of Istrian marble with the waters of the lagoon causes as chromatic shift in the colouration of the stones. Add to this the growth of algae, a third colour appears.
